The French League 2, otherwise known as the Ligue 2, is the second tier professional football division in the country.

There are only two pro levels in French football with the Ligue 1 being the ultimate goal of all teams competing in the lower structures.

The league acts as the conduit for the Championnat National championship and the Ligue 1 and is a fiercely contested completion.

The league comprises 20 teams with a promotion and relegation for the top two and bottom 3 teams respectively. The third place team takes part in a play-off with the club that finished third from the bottom in the Ligue 1.

The national league association tried to drop the number of promoted teams and relegated clubs down to two but this was rejected through appeal by the courts and the French Football Federation.

This means there is everything to play for in any given season with the riches and promises of the Ligue 1 up for grabs, and relegation to amateur status a real possibility.

This often means matches are closely contested and bettors will do well to follow current rating form rather than historical data.

There have many top flight footballers to come out of the Ligue 2 structure with the most well-known being current international star Olivier Giroud, who top scored for his then side Tours, with a tally 21 goals in the 2009/10 season.

Former England international Tony Cascarino also won the golden boot twice in the early 90’s for Marseilles banging in a combined total of 61 goals in two seasons (94/5, 95/6).

The two promoted teams from the 2017/18 season were Reims and Nimes and both clubs will be looking for a sustained spell in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile Troyes and Metz will have to ply their trade in second-tier after disastrous performances in Ligue 1 in the last campaign.

The newly promoted clubs, Red Star, Beziers and Grenoble will face a stern test to maintain the status quo in division 2 and will be out to prove the bookmakers and pundits wrong.

The favourites for the title for the 18/19 campaign will be Metz and Troyes and both will be keen to bounce back to the top-flight at their first attempt.

Another club looking to win the title or at least earn a play-off spot is Auxerre, while Lens is an outside bet for top honours.

The newly promoted teams always struggle as they gap between professional and amateur is often considerable.

Red Star, Grenoble and Beziers will all be favourites for the drop at the end of the season.

There are many bets to be placed on the Ligue 2, with top spot, promotion and relegation the most popular wagers before the season starts. Following the week action (Monday and Friday nights) is also an exciting bet-adventure and the cut and thrust of the league will offer thrills spills and upsets.
